New summit house on Pikes Peak taking shape nearly halfway through project
On Friday, KRDO NewsChannel 13 became the first to get an up-close look at the latest stage of construction on the new Pikes Peak Summit House.
Earlier this month, after a year of preliminary work and laying the foundation, workers began installing prefabricated and precast segments that will form the structure of the new complex.
Part of the three-story structure now rises above the southeast end of the peak.
The project includes a walkway around much of the edge of the summit, to be called The Titanic Experience.
Workers have a goal of finishing most exterior work before winter so that interior work can continue, with the project scheduled for completion by the end of next summer.
The existing summit house, which opened in 1963, will be demolished shortly after the new facility is finished.
The project’s cost is around $60 million, with all but $7 million raised through private contributions. Organizers will announce a fundraising campaign for the remaining amount next week.
