Fort Carson addresses D rating in Army housing survey

Just one day after the Army released a new housing survey, a Fort Carson garrison commander is responding to the low grade.

The Army Privatized Housing Survey was conducted between April and May of 2019 of 43 installations, consisting of 390 neighborhoods.

Fort Carson is in the bottom three, receiving a 64% in overall satisfaction, putting them in the “poor” category.

Another survey conducted by the Military Family Advisory Network found similar results back in June with “nearly 60 percent of respondents described difficulties with maintenance issues or a general lack of repairs and remediation.”

Friday, Garrison Commander Col. Brian K. Wortinger said, “I was expecting those results to be a little bit higher, however, any feedback is good feedback.”

In recent months, several Fort Carson families have reached out to KRDO, expressing their concerns with living conditions.

PIctures sent anonymously out fear of retaliation, show mold, maggots, and sinks that could not drain inside homes.

Wortinger explained in the last few months, they have been working with the private company, Balfour Beatty, who manages the housing on the installation.

Since February, Wortinger says the company has processed 16,000 work orders after holding a town hall meeting where residents were able to air their concerns directly to housing leaders.

In an effort to increase customer satisfaction, Wortinger says Fort Carson representatives will play more of a part in maintenance issues.

He says, “we the Army side, are now present at the move-ins that come onto Fort Carson, making sure they have a clean safe home that they move into.”

Wortinger also explained Fort Carson will be reviewing a percentage of work orders and following up with residents to make sure the work was complete.
