Survey: Colorado voters don’t approve of ‘Democratic overreach’ or Governor recall

A new survey on Colorado’s political climate shows voters are split when asked if they think Democrats overreached in the 2019 legislature session, but don’t agree that Governor Jared Polis should be recalled.

The survey by Magellan Strategies asked 500 people to vote in the Colorado 2020 election. The questions were either asked over the phone or online.

It found that Colorado voters are split on big issues facing the state in 2019.

Democrats held the majority in the State House, Senate and Governor’s Office, giving them the advantage in the legislative session.

Throughout the session, some Republicans called the Democrats’ actions an “overreach.” This is after the legislature passed laws that some conservative groups have blasted, such as the Red Flag bill.

Republican State Senator Paul Lundeen who represents District 9 in El Paso County said, “this year, Democrats control the Senate, Democrats control the house, Democrats control the Governor’s office and they have run any number of democrat agenda bills at the process.”

Meanwhile, Democrat State Representative Daneya Esgar who serves District 46 in Pueblo County said, “I work really hard to go across the aisle to make sure we get the work done for the people of Southern Colorado and I truly believe most of my colleagues feel the same way.”

The survey says, “voters are evenly split when asked if Governor Polis and the Democratic state legislature overreached during this past legislative session, passing bills that went too far and were out of touch with everyday Coloradans. A plurality of voters, 45%, believe that they did overreach, 40% do not think they overreached, and 15% are unsure or don’t have an opinion.”

Although, the same doesn’t go for the same voters who asked if they support the recall against Polis.

“Despite 45% agreeing that Governor Polis and the legislature overreached this past session, 47% of voters oppose the effort to recall the Governor, 38% support recalling him and 15% are undecided,” the survey explains.

KRDO asked people in Downtown Colorado Springs what they thought of the survey’s results, ending up with split opinions.

Justin Atwood explained, “I think the governor has been overreaching people’s rights-violating their fourth amendment right that could potentially have law enforcement enter their homes.”

Ingrid Korioth disagreed. She said, “we voted for them and I think that we should let them do their thing and come next election, that’s when we would be deciding to oust them.”

In a Facebook Live video, the opinions of users were also split. Many calling for a recall on Governor Jared Polis, while others complimented his time in office so far.

Ultimately, as the survey explains, the 2020 election is favoring the Democrats, but because more potential voters are paying attention, the winning races could go to the party who gets more voters to the poll.
