KRDO investigates complaints against “Decks R Us” in Colo. Springs
An update to a KRDO NewsChannel 13 investigation into Colorado Springs-based deck contractor Kevin McGee of ‘Decks R Us.’
“We trusted him and trusted the story he told us,” said Charlene and Frank Keating. “We feel violated.”
The Keatings paid McGee $6,250 upfront — a quarter of the cost of their deck — back in October of last year.
“He has yet to call us back, or do any work at all,” Charlene said staring at the contract she signed with him 10 months ago.
“It was a nightmare finding all these people that have been ripped off by these guys… they need to be stopped,” said Charles and JoAnn Lawson, a couple we first introduced you to last week.
The Lawson’s said they paid McGee more than $90,000 well over the past year to construct a new deck for their home in Pike National Forest. According to the couple, some of the work was completed but most wasn’t.
Now, 19 months later, the Lawson’s are left with:
No deck No railing No pergola No gutters No retaining wall No sign
“They have no business stealing more money from people and hurting them,” said JoAnn Lawson.
The Lawsons and the Keatings are just a couple of at least eight families who have reported being scammed by Kevin McGee or business dealings with ‘Decks R Us’ within the past couple years. That’s according to the sites Scamion, the Better Business Bureau, and Ripoff Report.
NewsChannel 13 reporter Stephanie Sierra had a scheduled interview with McGee Tuesday morning at 10:30am, yet McGee failed to show.
Sierra spoke with his colleague Ken Peterson affiliated with Majestic Outdoor Environments LLC.
“You advertise online that you have a solid reputation and that you treat your customers like you would like to be treated. Do you think these people are getting treated fairly?” Sierra asked Peterson.
“I think they’re getting treated as the best we can treat them,” Peterson said.
“So the best that you can treat them is waiting 10 months with no response?” Sierra asked.
“There has been a response,” said Peterson.
“Do you have proof of that?” Sierra asked.
“I do,” Peterson said.
“Can I see it?”
“No thank you.”
Peterson refused to show our team any documentation that would back up their story.
“We go off documents, we go off hard facts and the facts that I have in my hand…you guys aren’t giving me any facts. So how am I supposed to believe you?” said Sierra.
“Well I’m not really concerned whether you believe me or not,” Peterson said.
Since our coverage, several other families have come forward with similar claims against ‘Decks R Us.’
