Colorado Springs ranks 7th most popular city for millennials

A new analysis using Census Bureau data shows that more millennials than ever are moving to Colorado Springs.

In its third annual study, SmartAsset looked at immigration and emigration data from 173 cities to find out which destinations are most popular for millennials — people aged 20 to 34 — in 2019.

Colorado Springs ranked seventh in cities, coming behind Charlotte, North Carolina in sixth and narrowly beating out San Diego, California in eighth. Dallas, Texas claimed the number one spot.

Colorado Springs saw a net increase of 3,368 millennials in 2017. Of the total 16,279 millennials who moved to the city in 2017, 10,481 of them were from out of state, says Kara Gibson of SmartAsset

They also looked at statewide data. Colorado overall ranked third, coming in behind Texas in second and Washington in first.

The analysis indicates that — as a general rule — millennials are moving South and West. All the cities in the top ten reflect this finding. A sole outlier is New Hampshire, which comes in at tenth in the overall state rankings.

SmartAsset suggests that millennial migration patterns develop for a variety of reasons, including job opportunities, affordable housing, and quality of life.
