Man on the loose after stealing car, pushing out victim who jumped inside
Colorado Springs police are looking for a 29-year-old man who allegedly stole an SUV, assaulted the two people who jumped inside it to stop him, and then pushed one of them out while speeding through southeast Colorado Springs.
Joseph Layman is now wanted for kidnapping and second-degree assault after the wild series of events Friday morning.
Police say Layman was in the process of stealing a car from the area of 2700 Arlington Drive when he was interrupted by the victim and a friend. The two of them tried to stop Layman and ended up getting inside the vehicle, according to police. It happened shortly after 11 a.m.
Layman then took off at a “high rate of speed” with the two victims still inside. One of the victims was able to call 911 and give police a description of where they were.
One officer spotted the vehicle on Academy, but couldn’t stop it because of traffic, according to a police report. While Layman was fleeing, he allegedly pushed one of the victims out of the car while it was still moving. The second victim jumped out a short time later, police said.
Layman is still on the loose and is reported to be in a white 1996 Chevy Tahoe with the Colorado license CBG 655. The vehicle also has a crack in the windshield.
Layman is described as a white man, 6′ tall and 220 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He’s considered armed and dangerous.
