Court documents detail how a man tried to smuggle a burrito of drugs into a Buena Vista prison

A man was arrested for smuggling drugs into a prison — and he did it via a burrito in his lunch box.

Trevor Martineau, 27, was arrested under probable cause by the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office for smuggling illegal narcotics into the Buena Vista Correctional Facility where he worked.

Investigator James Lusk, an officer from the State of Colorado Department of Corrections, was tipped off to Martineau’s activities by an inmate at BVCF on May 28.

Lusk applied for a warrant to place a vehicle tracker on Martineau’s car on May 30, which a judge approved on June 5.

In late June, Lusk received more information from two additional inmates at the facility.

At approximately 5:40 a.m. on July 2 Lusk observed Martineau walking towards the facility to report to his shift, acting as though he had an injured leg. Investigators Lusk and Blevins approached Martineau and escorted him to their office to be interviewed.

The investigators asked Martineau if he was carrying illegal narcotics on his person or belongings, and Martineau admitted that he was. When asked where the narcotics were hidden, Martineau said they were in his lunch box. As Blevins and Lusk were inspecting the contents of the lunch box, they noticed a plastic baggie protruding from a large burrito.

They asked Martineau if the drugs were hidden in the burrito. Martineau acknowledged that this was the case.

Blevins unrolled the burrito and found several items in plastic wrap:

91.4 grams of methamphetamine 26.1 grams of heroin 46 strips of Suboxone, a brand medication commonly prescribed to treat opiate addiction, with the highly addictive active ingredient buprenorphine naloxone. 10 strips of suspected buprenorphine naloxone 6 thumb drives

Martineau told investigators that he was paid $1,000 for picking up the drugs, which he said was located in his bedroom dresser. Martineau’s wife signed a consent search so that investigators could find and confiscate the money, which they then did.

Martineau was arrested and transported to the Chaffee County Jail on the following charges:

Introduction of Contraband in the first-degree Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance (Meth) Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance (Heroin) Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance (Suboxone) Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance
