El Paso County DUI arrests for 4th of July weekend increase sevenfold

The El Paso County Sheriff’s office made seven times as many DUI arrests this Fourth of July weekend compared to 2018.

From July 3 through July 8, officers made 43 DUI arrests. According to CDOT, deputies made only 6 DUI arrests during the same holiday weekend in 2018, suggesting that the Sheriff’s Office has upped their degree of DUI enforcement.

This supports Sgt. Cliff Porter’s statement last week that the Sheriff’s Office would increase the number of officers committed to DUI enforcement for this year’s holiday.

“It’ll be some of the highest numbers of deputies dedicated solely to impaired drivers that we have seen on the roads in El Paso County in more than a year,” Porter said.

They also recovered a quarter-pound of meth, several grams of heroin and crack cocaine, and one stolen vehicle.
