CDOT ramps up Interstate 25 Gap Project for the summer

The Colorado Department of Transportation is ramping up the Interstate 25 Gap project this summer as they prepare for the busiest traffic season of the year.

One of the primary goals of the project is to add an express lane that will allow for safer and more reliable traffic on the 18-mile corridor, giving motorists three lanes for travel each way.

Tamara Rollison, a spokesperson with CDOT, said the project is expected to be completed by fall 2022. Check on this article later tonight for more details about what you can expect this summer.

“The key benefit of the project is improving safety by widening the shoulders, by improving the pavement, by providing a safer transportation facility, and also by providing traveler choice,” Rollison said.

CDOT says travelers can expect two lanes to be open during peak traffic times but that the speed limit would go down to 65 mph while construction is underway.

Rollison said it is important for drivers to follow the speed limit and to give themselves enough time to arrive to their destination on time.

The express lane will have a variable toll for people to use it but motorcyclists and vehicles with three or more people can drive on it for free.

“The behind this is moving more people safely and more efficiently,” Rollison said.

According to CDOT, the best way to stay updated on construction developments and delays is to follow its Twitter or to sign up for text alerts at I25GAP to 21000.
