Inmate dies in custody at El Paso County Jail

An inmate died in custody at El Paso County Jail on Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office reported Monday.

The inmate, fifty-seven-year-old Terry Wayne West of Colorado Springs, had a medical episode early Thursday. He was transported to the medical wing for evaluation when his behavior became erratic and self-harming. Deputies attempted to restrain West to reduce his injuries when he then became unresponsive.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death. CSPD will investigate.

West was in custody for a parole violation warrant and the following charges: Attempt to Influence a Public Servant, Criminal Impersonation, and Driving Under the Influence of Drugs.
