Crews work to fully contain Smith Canyon Fire in Otero County

As of Monday morning, the Smith Canyon Fire in Otero County is 40% contained.

The Otero County Sheriff’s Office is expected to give an update on the size of the fire that is burning south of Higbee on Monday morning.

Additional local and state crews have been called out to the fire, in addition to a helicopter.

The fire was started by lightning on Saturday. Increased wind gust contributed to a loss of containment over the weekend.

There is no estimated time as to when the fire will be fully contained. At this time there have been no reports of injuries.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
