Carlin Dunne dies in crash at Pikes Peak Hill Climb
Motorcyclist Carlin Dunne has died after a crash during the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Dunne, 36, was just short of the finish line when the crash happened. Ambulances left the summit right after the crash and took Dunne down the mountain.
At about 3:40 p.m., Ducati issued a statement saying Dunne passed away. The crash happened at about 10:30 a.m.
“There are no words to describe our shock and sadness. Carlin was part of our family and one of the most genuine and kind men we have ever known. His spirit for this event and love of motorcycling will be remembered forever as his passing leaves a hole in our hearts,” said Jason Chinnock, CEO Ducati North America.
It’s not yet clear what led to his crash.
Dunne had won the motorcycles division in four previous Hill Climbs, and his qualifying time for the 2019 running was the fastest in his division. He was largely expected to take the top finishing time for motorcycles.
He had just given an interview to CNN this week about his quest for his fifth title.
Dunne’s death is the seventh in the history of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
