Young Colorado Springs couple killed in Hawaii plane crash

The fiery plane crash in Hawaii that killed nearly a dozen people Friday claimed the lives of a young married couple from Colorado Springs.

Monday, just three days after the crash, a neighborhood is in mourning. Bryan and Ashley Weikel were celebrating their one year anniversary in Hawaii when tragedy struck.

On Friday, a skydiving plane crashed, killing all 11 people on board. The crash happened just after takeoff on the island of Oahu, making it the deadliest civilian plane crash in the U.S. since 2011.

Honolulu’s Fire Chief, Manuel P. Neves said, “This is the most tragic aircraft incident that we’ve had. We had some helicopters with the military but this is a civilian plane that went down and with that many people on board.”

Neighbors who knew the couple didn’t want to be shown on camera. However, Kathy Husar, who lives right next door to the Weikels’ home, said she knew them extremely well and said they were incredible people.

“Ashley was physically beautiful, beyond beautiful as a person, just had a huge smile, working really hard. He was a hard worker, they were just so in love, they were celebrating their one year anniversary. It’s just devastating,” said Husar.

Another neighbor who lives across the street said that Bryan and Ashley didn’t have any children, but they had a dog named Dom, whom she says they adored.

“Pretty special dog for two very special people. They had everything going for them. It’s just a shame. It really is, it’s tragic,” said the neighbor, Donna.

Neighbors speak about how they had their entire life ahead of them, and on July first, Ashley was launching her own business. Kathy and Donna both say that their presence in this tight-knit community will definitely be missed.

Another resident of Colorado, 29-year-old Casey Williamson of Vail, was killed in the crash, according to the Associated Press.
