Police respond to fatal shooting at Pueblo park

UPDATE: The Pueblo County Coroner has identified the name of the victim of Sunday morning’s Bessemer Park shooting. The man is 37-year old Floyd Robinson of Pueblo.

PREVIOUS STORY: One man was shot dead at Bessemer Park Sunday morning. Police and witnesses say multiple people fled the scene after multiple shots were fired.

Shooting occurred near the 1300 block Pine Street.

“It was like a quick pop pop pop,” said Larry Grade who lives across the street from the park.

At 9:17 a.m. Pueblo Police received a call of shots fired here at Bessemer park. When they arrived they found a single body lying motionless.

“We arrived on scene to find a deceased black male,” said Sgt. Frank Ortega with the Pueblo Police Department.

The Pueblo County Coroner tells KRDO they have identified the victim, and have reached out to family. However, they cannot release his name until they speak with the family.

Sgt. Ortega says the victim is someone Police are familiar with, and is sometimes considered to be homeless.

As for the shooter, police are gathering information.

“We have some people at the station now that are being interviewed who know what happened here,” said Ortega.

“I am very scared cause I’ve never experienced anything like this in my entire life,” said Kevin Belcher.

Belcher was one of the witnesses questioned by investigators. He lives across the Northern Avenue from the park and was walking to the gas station near his home when shots rang out.

“I saw one gentleman hit the ground and another gentleman hit the ground while one went off running that did the shooting,” said Belcher. “The second one that hit the ground got up and just casually walked off like nothing ever happened.”

Belcher says the shooter fled the scene in a vehicle. Police have not identified the make or model of the getaway vehicle.

Investigators also do not have a person of interest at this time, or an ID of the third person involved who walked away from the scene.

For people who live nearby , Bessemer P ark is no place for this.

“It’s scary with what’s going on right here especially with the swimming pool, and a kids water park,” said Belcher. “Our youth is right here and this stuff is happening.”

According to Pueblo Police, no arrests have been made, and there is no threat to the public.

The Bessemer Park pool will be shutdown until the crime scene can be fully processed.

The investigation is still ongoing.
