Police investigating shooting at UCHealth Memorial in Colorado Springs

Police say two people are dead at UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central after shots were fired inside the Colorado Springs hospital.

The original calls came in just before 1:00 pm for shots fired.

The victims are one male and one female, but it’s unclear who shot first.

Lieutenant James Sokolik said neither party was an employee of the hospital but could not clarify if they were patients or visitors.

He explained, “when [police] arrived on scene, they did locate two deceased parties in the hospital.”

The hospital was not locked down because police said the affected area was contained.

Kimberly Munyan who was visiting a family member said, “everything looked normal on the inside.”

Outside Lynette Beach who was trying to catch the bus near the hospital said, “I saw police get out of the car with their guns drawn and that’s when I got nervous.

Outside the hospital were several police cruisers near the emergency entrance.

While KRDO couldn’t see the scene inside the hospital, Chief Nursing Officer Mark Mayes said hospital staff jumped into action.

“I want to commend them for their bravery and for what they did in response to this situation,” he explained.

Mayes continued to say all staff is trained for situations like the one in the hospital today.

The identifies of the two deceased parties have not been released.
