Summer solstice brings snow and damp conditions

Friday’s solstice means summer, sun and …snow?

Cool and damp weather is likely to continue into the summer, plus there’s a winter weather advisory in the central mountains this weekend.

Snowpack levels are still well above average, 150% higher than normal, which is good news for everyone hoping for a quieter fire season, says KRDO Chief Meteorologist Merry Matthews. Big snowpack means big snowmelt will keep the streams and rivers high.

The wet conditions are likely to progress into the fall, especially as monsoon season kicks off in July.

And although this may mean fewer fire risks than normal, just one dry period for a couple weeks will dry out the foliage quickly.
