8th annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament held at the Broadmoor
Thursday was the 8th annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament. The charitable event has become a yearly tradition bringing money into the community.
And for the eighth consecutive year, the charity tournament was sold out.
Mayor John Suthers took on this event from the previous mayor, Steve Bach, with the idea of helping local kids in the community.
“For scholarships for police and fire candidates at Pikes Peak Community College, and also for a program called First Tee which introduces kids of all socioeconomic backgrounds to the game of golf,” said Suthers.
The 120 people participating were split into 30 teams for this year’s event. Among the players were two former Olympians.
Cindy Stinger said, “Raises money for First Tee and the scholarships that it provides for kids in our community, it’s an honor to be here.”
While Greg Morava added, “Kids, they are our future. I mean we are old Olympians, we need new kids and new students so this is a fantastic event.”
An educator and three-time participant in the Mayor’s Cup, Greg Stephens, says there is no better way to help the community.
“To help kids, to help students to get into those careers, we need those type of people,” said Stephens.
Over the years, this event has raised nearly half a million dollars.
Suthers said, “It’s become a very, very successful event, we are always sold out every year. In the eight years, we have raised over $450,000 and we typically raise about $50,000 each year for those scholarships.”
Suthers hopes this event lasts for decades to come.
