Five USAFA graduates getting married at Cadet Chapel this weekend
Some recent graduates of the U.S. Air Force Academy are taking on another commitment before moving on to their next assignment; getting married!
Cadets are required to be single when admitted and until they graduate at the academy.
The first to say their “I do’s” are 2nd Lieutenant Blake Lawrie and his now wife, Kayley.
Right before she walked down the aisle she said, “I’m going to be overwhelmed with happiness. I’m probably going to cry.”
The couple has dreamt of having their ceremony at Cadet Chapel at the academy, but originally thought it would be closed for renovations.
One week after Lawrie proposed, the announcement came that the chapel would be delaying their construction, thus allowing some couples to get married right after graduation.
He said, “it’s just been absolutely perfect.”
The Lawries are headed for Oklahoma so he can start pilot school.
“I know how hard he’s worked for this and he absolutely deserves it. I’m so excited to see him in pilot training,” she says.
Both their families joined together as one, but Kayley became a part of a bigger family; the U.S. Air Force.
Walking back down the aisle came with a long-standing tradition by the Sabre Drill Team.
Before passing to the end of the aisle, the team asks for “a kiss to pass,” then a second with a dip, and as the bride passed through, she’s patted on the behind with a sabre while one member of the team says, “Welcome to Air Force, Mrs. Lawrie.”
In this case, she laughed and said she was “completely shocked.”
Mr. Lawrie explained, “I didn’t tell her about it. It was a complete shock to her.”
Five graduates are getting married at the Cadet Chapel this weekend. They are among the hundreds scheduled for this summer.
