Polis signs laws to allow marijuana home delivery and social consumption in Colorado

Governor Jared Polis signed two new marijuana laws this week, opening the door to legal social consumption and marijuana delivery.

“I’ve been waiting on this for a long time,” Michelle Stoddard, store manager for Living Rose Wellness said.

Stoddard has worked in the marijuana industry for eight years. As far as tasting rooms, Stoddard said it gives people the opportunity to try cannabis out. Adding home delivery would be a good option for homebound medical patients.

“They depend on caregivers that might not be able to get them their medicine on time. That would make us be able to provide them with a timely process to eliminate the flareups the seizures, etc. things of that nature,” Stoddard said.

But here’s the thing, local governments have to opt into the laws.

So, it’s on the city council or the people to allow these laws to take effect in Colorado Springs.

“I don’t think it will have a great deal of impact on Colorado Springs,” Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers said.

Suthers said it’s not likely these laws would be active in the city, saying if the council gets enough votes to pass an ordinance, he’d veto home delivery for red card holders as well as recreational use and social consumption.

“All indications are that there’s a very very small percentage of cardholders that actually have the marijuana for medical purposes,” Suthers said.

Marijuana lounges can start operating in the state, where local governments allow on Jan. 1, 2020. Which is also when delivery for red card holders can begin, with recreational delivery following in 2021.
