Late spring storm leaves behind hundreds of damaged trees in Colorado Springs
Cleanup for a late spring storm that came through Colorado Springs is just beginning.
Late Monday night, a storm dumped inches of snow across the city. The snow was so wet and heavy it knocked down hundreds of trees across the area.
Patricia DeJong, who lives near Palmer Park, says she knew the trees outside her house wouldn’t make it.
“I mean, I knew they were too heavy. They’re too heavy for the tree they’re attached to,” she explained.
The trees outside her yard technically belong to the city, and she’s hoping they pick up the trunks left in her yard.
“I just want something that’s that size taken care of because they said it was me, not the trees. I didn’t come out here and kick any trees,” she explains.
On the other side of town near Powers Blvd. and Astrozon, Fay Ouellette says she came outside to the driveway to find her trees completely covering her vehicle.
She says the tree in her backyard “completely split in half.”
Near Academy and Galley, Don Schiner came out to some trouble at his apartment complex. His maintenance man alerted him that his van was under a tree.
“This is a parking spot. I just pulled up here last night and I parked. I started raining and then snow… and I didn’t think anything of it,” he said.
The tree was weighed down so much, it came over the side of the fence and landed on his vehicle.
Now he has to wait for it be removed before he can assess the damage.
Many homeowners across the city were able to break down or rake the branches out of their yard, but some will end up having to find professional help to clean up the mess.
