Former Huerfano County captain gets short jail term, probation for child sex assault

A former member of the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office who pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault of a child was sentenced Tuesday to just 30 days in jail alongside a supervised probation term.

According to Colorado Court records, Kevin Vallejos entered a guilty plea in January for sexual assault of a child by someone in a position of trust. He had previously pled guilty last July to attempted sexual assault overcoming victim’s will.

The first count stems from an incident that happened in September-October of 1998, the second charge involves an incident in 2016.

Vallejos was sentenced to 30 days in jail and seven years of probation for the first charge, and he got three years of probation for the second conviction. He also has to pay several thousand dollars in fines and surcharges.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigations led the case.
