Family of suspect who shot Pueblo police speaks out

A Pueblo Police Officer, Jonathan Bell, is still recovering in the hospital after he was shot in both legs while trying to arrest a man last week.

After the shootout, the suspect, Michael Hensley died at the scene.

Now, the mother of his children, Desirae Duran, is speaking out. She says Hensley was on his way to visit her and his two kids just before the shooting.

“Me and my children were standing there, waiting for dad to come,” she says.

Hensley never made it. Pueblo police say two officers approached a man when he ran away and opened fire.

Duran explains, “that’s when all gunshots started going off.”

Hensley had a criminal history and was suspected of violating his parole. Duran says it’s why he might have run.

“He was on the run from parole. That would be the only reason why,” she says.

Duran hasn’t returned to her apartment because there are still bullet holes and blood stains from the crime scene.
As she hugs her youngest son, she explains wanting to know what led up to the shooting that night.

“I just hope the truth comes out, you know?”

Continuing on to say, “If Michael did shoot, our family will understand why it turned out that way.”

Hensley died at the scene from his injuries.

Both Pueblo Police officers are on administrative leave. It’s protocol when an officer opens fire.
