Suspect dead and officer injured in Pueblo shooting

One person is dead and a police officer is injured following a shooting in Pueblo.

Officers were responding to a suspicious person call near the Don Quixote Apartments on the 2000 block of S. Acero Ave., around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. It was there that they tried to talk to a man when he ran from them.

Investigators tell us the suspect then fired at officers. One officer was hit twice in the legs and may have a broken femur.

Officers returned fire and fatally injured the suspect, who was later identified as 28-year-old Michael Hensley. Hensley died at the scene.

Hensley had an arrest warrant for a parole violation.

The officer who was shot is currently at a hospital in Colorado Springs. Sgt. Ortega with the Pueblo Police Department says the officer is out of surgery and will have a long road to recovery.

The other officer involved in the firefight was not hurt.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave per standard protocol. Their identities will be released by the Pueblo Police Department at a later time.

This marks the Pueblo Police Department’s second officer-involved shooting of 2019.
