Colorado Springs red light cameras to go live on April 9

The City of Colorado Springs is implementing a red light safety program and has scheduled two cameras to go live on April 9.

Starting April 9, the red light cameras at the intersections of East Platte Ave. at Chelton (eastbound approach) and Briargate Blvd. at Lexington Blvd. (westbound approach) will go live.

The City says only drivers who enter the intersection after the light has turned red will receive a ticket. Police will review images and video of all infractions before a citation goes in the mail. Drivers will also be able to view the photo and video online.

Red light safety camera violations are a non-moving infraction and will be fined $75. No points will be added to the driver’s record.

If an officer issues a red light citation, it’s a moving violation with a $150 fine and points against the driver’s license.

The City also says the red light program is funded by people who are fined for running red lights. They continue to say that revenue is not the goal and say the goal is to make roads safer and reduce the number of collisions and injuries.
