Fort Carson won’t lose maintenance funding to border wall

Funding for Fort Carson’s new vehicle maintenance facility was on the chopping block for President Donald Trump’s border wall, but a new list released Monday has good news for the Mountain Post.

Sen. Jack Reed’s office released a Department of Defense fact sheet on the funding for Trump’s national emergency declaration. It contains a list of all military construction projects that have yet to be awarded and some criteria for how the funds will be collected.

Fort Carson’s vehicle maintenance facility is on the list because the funds — a total of roughly $77 million — will be awarded in June.

But in finding the potential pool of sources, the DoD said it would apply specific criteria. One of those is that “The pool of potential military construction projects from which funding could be reallocated to support the construction of border barrier are solely projects with award dates after September 30, 2019,” according to the document.

Since the facility’s award date is prior to Sept. 30, the maintenance facility at Fort Carson is safe.

The DoD is also not slashing funds from any military construction projects that have already been awarded, and “no military housing, barracks, or dormitory projects will be impacted.”

Sen. Cory Gardner and Rep. Doug Lamborn both said they would work to keep the funds allocated for the Mountain Post from being affected by Trump’s emergency declaration.

Two other projects at Fort Carson that were previously at risk — a Special Operations Forces human performance training center, and a Special Operations Forces mountaineering facility — weren’t on Monday’s list of projects with unawarded funds.
