Marty’s Sunday Morning Forecast – Chilly Start! – 3/10/19

Today: The morning will start out cloudy and/or foggy with some flurries possible over low lying areas near the mountains, but we do expect any low clouds to break up slowly through the day. All areas will be breezy and cooler this afternoon with high temperatures mostly in the 40s for the plains although south of the Arkansas River a few 50s are possible, mainly 30s over the mountains.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with patchy low clouds possibly developing again over low lying areas mainly east of the mountains. We expect the air to cool into the 20s for most areas by morning.

Extended: Expect increasing clouds and a chilly breeze for all areas on Monday with scattered rain and snow showers moving in from the south during the afternoon. Stronger showers may produce some graupel/snow pellets, and over the mountains and higher terrain along I-25 bursts of wet snow could briefly reduce visibility and whiten roadways. Widespread accumulating snow doesn’t look real likely for many areas but over and near the mountains some could receive a quick 1″ to 3″ of wet snow especially on the cooler surfaces through Monday evening. Heavier snow could fall over the ski resorts, particularly over the southern half of the state. Rain and snow showers should end for most areas late Monday night but some low clouds and/or fog may develop over the plains and a few showers will remain possible over far southern and eastern areas. Tuesday looks windy, warmer and mostly dry for many of us along the I-25 corridor but scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible over the far southern and eastern areas. High temperatures Tuesday afternoon should reach the 50s and 60s for the plains with 40s over the mountains.

A strong storm will move over the region on Wednesday bringing wind and colder air to the state. Areas of rain and snow are possible with snow most likely on the higher terrain along and west of I-25, but right now it is difficult to know if the storm will intensify quickly enough to bring an extended period of widespread rain and snow to our area, a brief period of localized heavy precipitation to some of us, or just scattered showers and wind. We’ll be tracking this system closely over the next several days but for now expect blustery conditions for many areas on Wednesday and stay tuned for updates. Chilly air will settle in through the end of the week with chances for periods of snow mainly along and west of I-25. The weekend looks drier and a bit warmer.
