Cleanup resumes for area contaminated by Old Colorado Smelter site

Cleanup is scheduled to resume Tuesday in the area contaminated by the Old Colorado smelter site in Pueblo.

The area was designated a Superfund site by Pueblo City Council about 5 years ago. The Environmental Protection Agency confirmed it will do some excavation of contaminated soil in residents’ yards and backfill those yards with clean fill, all in an effort to reduce exposure to contamination.

James Miller is the project manager of the Superfund site and says it is really important for the work to be done in the area.

“It’s really important if you have your yard and we’re coming to ask if we can sample and do a cleanup of it, we’re really asking the community to participate because it’s really an important component of the work to get to every yard that we can,” Miler said.
