Wildfire in Baca County 100% contained, officials say fire started from cigarette
UPDATE: The Baca County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the fire from Wednesday is 100% contained.
After further investigation, it was discovered that the fire was caused by a negligent smoker.
Officials say they believe a smoldering cigarette was thrown from a vehicle or dropped by someone who stopped near the sign at the Colorado/Oklahoma state line on Hwy 287.
Disposing of a cigarette that is the proximate cause of the fire can lead to arson and other criminal charges.

A large wildfire is burning about eight miles south of Campo as of Wednesday afternoon.
The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control is sending a plane to the fire in Baca County. ( MAP ) It’s not known exactly how big the fire is.

The fire is moving northeast, and numerous residences have been evacuated, according to the Baca County Sheriff’s Office.
