Colorado residents, politicians react to State of the Union Address

President Donald Trump took center stage to give his second State of the Union address Tuesday and according to a CBS poll, 76 percent of people said they approved of what he had to say.

Unlike his first State of the Union speech, this time he gave the address with Democrats controlling the House of Representatives.

Trump during his speech said, “As we begin a new Congress, I stand here ready to work with you to achieve historic breakthroughs for all Americans.”

Along with reiterating his points for the border wall, Trump also tackled issues surrounding late-term abortion, reforming the rising price of prescription drugs, and accelerating pulling troops out of Syria. Local residents here in Colorado Springs said no matter the issues, they want to see bipartisanship.

“The people are what they are there for and they are just kind of forgetting about that,” said Bernard Penfield. “I think a little more bipartisanship would be a lot better and I hope they can work things like that out.”

While Emily Bankhead added, “I think we just have to see going forward if the things he talked about, if he really follows through with and negotiates with both sides.”

Sen. Cory Gardner said that he applauded the president in his call for compromise and bipartisanship, and he says he is ready to get to work.

“I stand ready to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fix our broken immigration system, fund border security, invest in our nations crumbling infrastructure to reduce traffic in Colorado and bolster our national security,” said Gardner.

Newly elected Gov. Jared Polis also responded to the State of the Union address via Twitter saying, “While DC politicians push for xenophobia, nationalism, and walls, Colorado will continue to push boldly forward, tearing down barriers to success and building a Colorado for all.”
