Pueblo doctor in yearbook with embattled Virginia governor

Gov. Ralph Northam is distancing himself from a decades-old picture of him in blackface in a school yearbook, and a Pueblo doctor was spotted on the adjacent page, and he’s also in makeup to darken his skin.

Northam is facing intense scrutiny after a picture from his yearbook page surfaced showing a man in blackface and a man dressed as a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Northam has apologized for the picture but denies that he’s one of the men in the picture.

But Parkview Medical Center is sticking up for Dr. Steven Nafziger, who went to Eastern Virginia Medical School with Gov. Northam. Parkview says Nafziger was “dressed and performing as one of The Supremes at a Halloween party during medical school.”

The picture is coming to light since it’s literally right across from Northam’s yearbook entry, but the context is different on the surface, and Nafziger has not denied being in that picture.

Nafziger is vice president of medical services at Parkview, but the medical center has no qualms about the photo resurfacing.

“Parkview would like to have the last 35 years of Dr. Nafziger’s life and his outstanding service and commitment to our community speak for itself,” a statement from the medical center said.
