Monday snowstorm covers southern cities along I-25

Colorado Springs and Teller County may have been blanketed by snow Monday morning, but the snowfall made an impact all over southern Colorado toward the New Mexico border.

No city or town along Interstate 25 was spared from the snow. Colorado City, Trinidad, and Walsenburg were hit, and in Pueblo, people were more than happy to see early morning snow as they walked up to their vehicles draped in white and grabbed shovels to clear paths for nearby walkers.

“Pueblo is still one of the only areas you can get frostbite and sunburn in the same week,” laughed Pueblo resident Richard Trujillo.

Others tell me it’s about time they got some snow. They feel that Pueblo always misses out.

“I like it, I love it, I want some more of it,” said Pueblo local Floyd Griego. “We need a lot more of it for the moisture. It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a good one.”

KRDO crews out of Pueblo followed the snowstorm along I-25, starting in the Steel City all the way to the New Mexico border.

Drivers on the interstate had a different outlook for snowy, slushy, and windy weather that made for dangerous driving conditions. Many told us they were taking precautions before they hit the roads with extra blankets and coats in case they of a wreck.

“I’m driving very slow and trying to stay away from people who are driving fast,” said Alamosa resident Cathy Johnson who was leaving Pueblo heading back to Alamosa.

Johnson drove by a wreck on the side of the interstate involving an 18-wheeler and two other pickup trucks.

“They were going too fast, and they lost control,” said Johnson when asked about the accident. “The slush can make your car go off the road so people just need to slow down and use patience.”

KRDO spoke with Colorado Department of Transportation and were notified they were monitoring the storm as it moved south. Fortunately, this week, they didn’t close down any of the highways like they did for portions of Interstate 25 near Colorado City during last week’s snowstorm.
