Marty’s Sunday Morning Forecast – Breezy & Warmer – 1/27/19

Today: Expect a partly cloudy and warmer afternoon with increasing wind. High temperatures should reach the 50s to near 60 over the plains of eastern Colorado, primarily 40s over our local mountain communities. As the afternoon wears on the wind gusts could exceed 30 mph over and near the mountains.

Tonight: We expect to become quite windy at times, especially over and near the mountains where gusts over 40 mph are likely through the night. Initially the wind will be a relatively warm, Chinook wind blowing off of the mountains and probably helping to hold temperatures in the 30s and 40s, but a strong cold front will arrive late causing the wind to abruptly change directions and the air to cool quickly. By morning we expect the plains will have temperatures in the 20s to lower 30s with our local mountain areas falling into the teens. Snow will develop over the ski resorts during the night and possibly over and near our local mountain areas by morning, particularly over northern parts of our coverage area.

Extended: All areas will be windy and much colder on Monday with temperatures likely falling throughout the day. We expect winter driving conditions over the high country due to the combination of wind and snow. It is also possible that a quick burst of wind driven snow will race southward along and west of the I-25 corridor Monday morning with scattered snow showers continuing into the afternoon. Although the quick moving nature of the cold front would likely limit total snowfall accumulations for the I-25 corridor on Monday, it is possible that the snow will fall heavily enough over a short period of time to reduce visibility, whiten roadways and cause several hours of slick travel over some areas. Temperatures on Monday will probably remain in the teens over our local mountain areas, mainly 20s to near 30 for the plains. The sky will clear and the air will get cold Monday night with low temperatures in the single digits above and below zero for most areas. The rest of the week looks dry with passing clouds, periods of wind and gradually warming air with high temperatures reaching the 40s and 50s for the plains by the latter half of the week.
