Investigation underway after Colorado Springs police officer shoots suspect

Police in Colorado Springs are investigating after a man was fatally shot by an officer following a struggle this weekend.

The shooting occurred at the Elevate Apartment complex at 340 Crestone Lane in Colorado Springs. A police officer was involved in the shooting, which resulted in the death of 50-year-old Bill Gerald Akes.

According to a press release, officers made contact with Akes who was in a stolen vehicle at the Elevate Apartments. When they tried to make contact with him, he began struggling with officers, resulting in bullets being fired. Akes was armed with a hatchet.

Akes ultimately died from the shootout. The cause and manner of the death will be determined by the Coroners Office.

No officers were injured in the shooting. CSPD identified Officer Brock Lofgren as the employee involved in the shooting.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation of the shooting. It said there is no danger to the public.
