Nearly 1,500 El Paso County families miss ‘SNAP’ deadline

Nearly 1,500 El Paso County families did not make the Tuesday deadline to be eligible for February SNAP benefits. Those families were up for redetermination and did not turn them in by the deadline.

“It’s terrifying, just knowing the kids might not have food come the end of the month or even next month,” said Cassandra Psomas, who missed the deadline.

While the number appears shocking, the department director at the El Paso County Citizens Service Center, Karen Logan explains it’s not unusual.

“That is actually consistent on any given month, about 35% of the families in El Paso County chose not to re-certify for their benefits,” Logan said.

But it’s not to say the impact isn’t significant. Plenty of affected families like Celebra Fayette are financially stuck.

“I feel like we all have the right and it shouldn’t be limited,” Fayette said.

According to Logan, it will be limited in the short-term, but some may still have a chance.

“Although they may not be guaranteed benefits, if there are additional benefits available from the federal government… they will receive those benefits if they’re eligible,” said Logan.

It’s a scary reality for mothers like Cassandra.

“Care less about us, as long as our kids get their food,” she said.

Bottom line — if you or your family missed the Tuesday deadline, it’s still important to submit your paperwork. The department will process it and provide you with any extra benefits if you’re eligible.

If you’re looking to apply for SNAP, the department is taking applications up until Jan. 29.
