Virginia woman whose husband is furloughed by government shutdown wins $100K lottery

A woman whose husband has not been getting paid due to the partial government shutdown just got a whole lot richer after winning the lottery.

According to USA Today, Air Force veteran, Carrie Walls of Ashburn, Virginia, just pocketed $100,000 and a new SUV after winning the state’s “Ford Expedition Plus $100K” lottery.

When Walls entered the lottery on December 4, she had no idea how important the win would become. Her ticket was picked from more than 554,000 entries, according to the Virginia Lottery.

“I cried. I couldn’t believe it,” Walls told Virginia Lottery officials of finding out she’d won the contest.

Walls’ husband has been furloughed in what has now become the longest federal government shutdown in history, CNN reports.

On Friday, Congress agreed to provide back pay to furloughed federal workers, and President Donald Trump has indicated he will sign the measure. However, with negotiations between Trump and congressional Democrats at an impasse, there’s no sign of when those paychecks will arrive.
