Handguns recovered from Walsenburg schools after being closed due to threats towards staff

Update: The two handguns stolen from the assistant principal’s home have been recovered. This according to the District’s Superintendent, Mike Moore.

There are still two handguns missing.

Peakview and John Mall were closed Thursday and placed on lockout Wednesday due to threats towards an assistant principal and faculty member.

The assistant principal’s home was robbed and two handguns were stolen. The assistant principal also experienced a verbal threat on Wednesday.

The schools decided to close Thursday after another faculty member had their home robbed and two guns were stolen.

This is an ongoing investigation.

It is unclear if the two Huerfano School District Re-1 schools will resume classes on Monday. Gardner School will remain on normal schedule. The Walsenburg to Gardner bus will pick up and drop off students at the district bus garage.
