Colorado DMV overcharges drivers due to computer glitch

According to the Colorado Department of Revenue, some drivers who renewed their vehicle registration in Dec. 2018 were overcharged.

The Colorado DMV says the issue was all due to a computer glitch. Drivers who renewed their vehicle registration in Dec. 2018 were overcharged specific ownership tax (SOT) after a computer programming error calculated a higher SOT rate for the vehicles than at the rate outlined by the state.

The issue may have impacted some Coloradans with vehicle model years 2014-2018 and 2010.

Programming has been developed and is currently being tested to correct the issue and to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

The DMV is working with the DRIVES County Governance Committee and Colorado county clerks to reach out to those affected by the glitch.
