Colorado Springs business scammed into giving away money

A local business on East Woodmen Rd. was scammed into handing over money to who they thought was an auditor.

The manager told police on Sunday that an unknown man called the business and informed them of an audit occurring and requested that the manager count all the money on site.

The caller kept the manager on the phone for over 30 minutes and gave instructions to count the money out loud and then gave the manager a verification code. The man said an employee would respond to pick up the money to verify the amount.

A short time later, a white or Hispanic woman arrived wearing a black dress and what was believed to be a bright red, long hair wig. The woman came through the back door of the business and provided the code, requesting the money. The manager gave the woman the money and she left in an unknown direction.

It was immediately apparent that the incident was a scam. Police say similar calls for money have recently been reported.
