Mother arrested after infant dies of starvation

A 24-year-old mother from Pueblo West has been charged with child abuse, after the death of her 10-week-old son.

According to the Pueblo Sheriff’s Office, Jannie Gatlin was charged at her home on Friday. An arrest warrant was issued after an autopsy report revealed her son died as a result of severe malnourishment.

On December 29, deputies were called to Parkview West Emergency Room to investigate the suspicious death of a baby.

Doctors told deputies the child was unresponsive and appeared severely emaciated and dehydrated when he was brought in. Doctors tried to save the infant, but were unsuccessful.

“This is a very tragic situation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by this senseless tragedy,” said Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk M. Taylor.
