New Colorado license plates help support kids battling cancer

Starting Jan.1, Coloradans can get a specialty license plate to help children battling cancer.

According to KDVR, the license plate was 14-year-old Gabe Santistevan’s idea for the “Cure Childhood Cancer.” The Aurora teen is going through his own fight with cancer and wanted to help families going through the same struggle.

“I just want people to know there are kids out there diagnosed with cancer and they and their families are struggling to fight this disease,” Santistevan told KDVR.

Santistevan was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer at 9-years-old. His mom told KDVR he went through six rounds of chemotherapy, 32 days of high-dose radiation, and three brain surgeries. In 2014, he finished his treatment and is now cancer-free.

KDVR reports Santistevan and his mom petitioned the state for a custom license plate to support the Morgan Adams Foundation and Cops Fighting Cancer. In May of 2018, Governor John Hickenlooper signed the bill into law.
