President Trump signs Ashanti Alert Act into law
President Trump has signed the Ashanti Alert Act, legislation that would create a national alert system to notify the public about missing or endangered adults, into law on New Year’s Eve.
The legislation passed in the Senate unanimously Thursday.
According to WJLA News in Washington, D.C., the act was named in memory of Ashanti Billie, the 19-year-old woman who was abducted in Norfolk in September 2017. Billie was later found dead in North Carolina 11 days later.
At the time of Billie’s disappearance, she was considered too old for an Amber Alert, yet too young for a Silver Alert. The Ashanti Act aims to protect missing persons between the ages of 18 and 65.
