Winter Storm Arriving After Christmas 12-25-18

TONIGHT: Overnight into Wednesday there is the potential for freezing fog and freezing drizzle over the Eastern Plains. Low clouds and fog are possible as far west as Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Lows drop to the teens and 20s.

TOMORROW: We have issued a Weather Alert for both Wednesday and Thursday as strong storm system will be moving in during this time. It looks to bring accumulating snow to parts of the area with potential travel impacts and much colder temps. A wintry mix is possible across portions of the Plains early in the day and this may include some freezing drizzle or freezing rain. Anything frozen over the plains will switch back to rain during the morning hours. Once a strong cold front comes through during the day, it will change rain to snow from north to south. We could see snow in the Colorado Springs area by the afternoon and evening before wrapping up early Thursday. The heaviest of snow will come down from Trinidad through La Junta to Eads where 3-7″+ inches of snow is possible. Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for much of the area but are excluding El Paso and Teller counties. I’ve attached an image. Within the Winter Storm Warning we could see 3-7 inches (with some areas even higher). Plus, winds will be gusting to 50-60 mph out of the north making for very difficult travel on those east to west oriented roads with reduced visibility and blowing snow. Winds will not only be strong through the Plains, but also in the Pikes Peak region starting late Wednesday through much of Thursday.

EXTENDED: A second storm may then follow arriving Friday into Saturday but there is still much to determine with that one. Right now plan on checking back to updated forecasts as things begin to develop over the coming days. We are likely to see highs drop to the teens and 20s by later this week into the weekend. Lows will be in the single digits.
