CDOT plows moving to prep for big snowfall

Sleet, snow, and strong winds is what the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) says people in the southern part of the state should get ready for on the roads Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

With southern Colorado expected to get large amounts of snow, plows are being sent to expected problem areas.

“Pueblo and Colorado Springs possibly won’t get as much snow, so we would shift everyone east and south,” said D’Wayne Gaymon a CDOT Maintenance Superintendent with Region 2 of Colorado.

CDOT officials say they’ve been moving plows all day to make sure they are ready for Wednesday night’s storm and where it will hit the hardest. Towns like Trinidad, La Junta, and Lamar could see the most activity.

“Looking at anywhere between four to twelve inches depending on the location as long as it hits us like they are anticipating,” said Gaymon.

Snow isn’t CDOT’s biggest fear, though. They are expecting fifty mile-per-hour winds which could create whiteout conditions. Yet, road conditions could get worse from there.

“With it being warm right now and as the temperatures change from rain to snow there is the possibility of it freezing,” said Gaymon. “So you got the freeze issue of going from wet roads to icy roads as well.”

CDOT officials ask drivers to just steer clear from the roads Wednesday night as hundreds of plows try to clear the snow and ice, especially in the target areas.
