Colorado atheist group billboard: ‘Make Christmas Great Again….Skip Church’

An atheist group in Colorado is getting national attention for one of its anti-Christmas billboards that sits along Highway 6 & 50 near Rimrock Avenue.

The group named, The Western Colorado Atheists and Freethinkers paid for the new billboard which reads, “Make Christmas Great Again…Skip Church!”

According to KJCT News, the sign has been up since December 19 and the group says they did it because they feel atheists are a minority around Mesa County. The group also said they think the focus of the holiday season should display respect for everyone.

Members say the billboard is up because they think the focus of Christmas time should be on kindness, respect, and ethical treatment of others and it shouldn’t be on what they call religious backgrounds and practices.

The article from KJCT says the group also says they feel organized religions such as Catholicism and Jehovah’s Witnesses are ridden with corruption and sexual abuse.

“Christmas time, the focus should not be on organized religion because organized religion has proven problematic lately. We’d rather the focus be on humanity, ethics and respect for others,” said board member of Western Colorado Atheists and Free Thinkers, Anne Landman.

“They have a right to their free speech, but it would seem they could do that without being deliberately provocative,” said Fruita resident Robert Burkholder.

The group says the billboard is only temporary but will be up at least until Christmas Day.
