Man killed during rollover crash in Pueblo West

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office says one person is dead after he drove away from a restaurant at a high speed and then flipped his car into a power pole and fire hydrant.

The crash happened late Sunday night at E. Spaulding Ave., just south of Highway 50. Deputies were called for a rollover accident and found a 2007 Honda Civic that had flipped over several times.

Witnesses told investigators that the car sped off west, and people saw a cloud of dust just off the roadway shortly after.

Deputies say a 30-year-old man was driving and thrown from the car when it rolled. He was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries. We’re still waiting for his name to be released by the Coroner’s Office.

The crash also knocked out power for about 2,000 people in the area; low power lines because of damage to the pole forced a closure on Highway 50 for a few hours, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies believe excessive speed and alcohol are factors in the crash, but it’s still under investigation.
