Fight over the TV remote inside Colorado Springs prison ends deadly
A fight over the TV remote led to a “fatal stomp-down” at a Colorado Springs prison.
According to The Denver Post, prosecutors say 64-year-old Daniel Pena was killed by Danny Lee Gonzalez in Nov. 2017.
Gonzalez has been charged with second-degree murder. Both men were awaiting parole at the Cheyenne Mountain Re-entry Center.
The Denver Post reports prosecutor Grant Libby determined Wednesday that Gonzalez knocked down Pena and begun stomping him repeatedly on his head. This all while, five of Gonzalez’s friends stood guard.
Gonzalez’s attorneys claim he was defending himself after Pena took a swing at him. Public defender Kim Chalmers says Gonzalez didn’t stomp on Pena, claiming other inmates were exaggerating.
The Denver Post says Pena lost consciousness less than a half-hour after the incident and was later found slumped over in a bathroom. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a week later.
