Layaway gifts paid off in full for Fort Carson families

It’s the season of giving and for some Fort Carson families, this year’s holiday just got a little bit sweeter.

It was hard to miss the look of pure joy Thursday as Christmas came early for 29 families.

“It’s a blessing, just a blessing,” said one shopper.

“I was like oh my gosh, I was overwhelmed, I’m still in shock,” said another.

Shocked to find out their layaway list worth hundreds of dollars has been completely paid for.

“Someone paid off $500 to pay for my kid’s presents,” said Daniela Harvey.

Lawrence Simmons Jr., General Manager for the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, is just one of the many people who make the event possible.

All of the present are paid for by Pay Away Layaway, a non-profit.

They collect donations from the community throughout the year — all for the purpose of helping others enjoy the holiday.

“We’re a big deployment base and they’re away from their loved ones and this is a way to give back and make some folks very happy during this holiday season,” he said.

For Elois Burris the event has made her feel appreciated.

“I mean you work hard, you spend your money, and it’s just nice to know that someone is out there thinking of the customer,” she said.

And for a mother of three it all comes as a huge financial break.

“I was actually thinking, should I erase some presents because it’s way too much. My husband is like yes, he’s like the Grinch, you know? And he’s like it’s too much and I was like yeah I’ll go in and cancel some they don’t need,” Harvey said.

It’s an experience that’s adding to her Christmas spirit.

“I want to go out right now and help somebody else,” she said.

An act of kindness this organization hopes to inspire others to do this holiday season.
