Monument roofer bonds out of jail as other scam victims come forward
In a KRDO special report, we uncovered a local contractor accused of scamming more than a dozen clients out of their insurance money. Monday, we learned Daniel Nail, owner of “Nailed It Roofing” has bonded out of jail and is set to appear in court Tuesday morning.
You may remember our previous story that aired earlier this month. Since the story aired, we’ve heard from several of you reporting the same fraud.
This became a familiar complaint:
“I lost $30K” “I lost upwards of $20K” “I lost $30K” “I lost about $40K”
Big bucks were lost by many, so what can you do if you’re stuck in this mess?
KRDO sat down with criminal defense attorney Jeremy Loew who explains some options.
First, report the fraud to the police with as much documentation of your unfinished claim as possible.
“If the police aren’t being proactive enough, then you’ll need to reach out to the District Attorney’s office.”
Second, if you don’t get anywhere, report the crime to a district attorney’s office that has an “Economic Crimes Division” that specializes in this type of fraud.
“They are constantly building cases on roofers or on scam artists here in Colorado Springs or in El Paso County… if they have enough complaints they will prosecute,” Loew said.
Third, remember the two Ds: keep all documentation and do your due diligence.
“You need a written contract … you need to have dates certain of when things will be done… 30 days out for this or that,” Loew said. “Plus, doing Google reviews, Facebook research, and word of mouth groups.”
So bottom line — the key takeaways are documenting everything, even if that means using screenshots of your phone records to prove what’s necessary for your case.
It’s important to have a strong case for the DA’s office because they do have a Victim’s Compensation Fund that might be able to help you recover some of your money.
