Monument roofer accused of swindling over a dozen clients arrested for weapons charge

A possible state-wide contracting scam is prompting complaints from over a dozen people who had their money taken without any of the jobs completed, and now the owner of the company is facing weapons charges.

More than 10 people called into our newsroom complaining they’ve lost thousands of dollars to a man named Daniel Nail the owner of “Nailed It Roofing.”

We also heard a common complaint from former employees:

“I lost $30K” “I lost upwards of $20K” “I lost $30K” “I lost about $40K”

“My roofs are damaged, all my gutters are damaged, I have siding that’s damaged, I have decks that are damaged,” said Fountain resident Mary DePace, a former client of Daniel Nail.

For the past five months, Nail, 35, was supposed to be working for DePace.

Nail’s company advertises his services are “Home Improvement You Can Trust.”

“Once he got the money, I barely heard from him,” DePace said.

Nail started working on her first insurance claim, but after the second hail storm in Fountain, DePace said she’s out at least $20,000 from the two insurance deductibles.

“None of the work was completed for the second claim,” she said.

DePace said her roof has been ruined for the past month. Now, she’s worried it could be happening to others.

“What if he targets an elderly couple that’s on a very very fixed income?” she asked. That’s what happened to JoAnn and Rick Kronick, a couple in their 80s.

“We lost more than a thousand dollars,” said the Kronicks. “Our home isn’t done, no refund.”

Same with Brittney King, who is disabled and said she is still waiting to get $1,300 back.

There are also a number of middlemen stuck in the mess. People like Brennan Patten, who is the window contractor for a number of Nail’s clients.

“I have two closed jobs and seven open jobs, the closed jobs were completed and no payment …
the seven jobs are open so this is thousands of dollars,” said Patten.

KRDO reached out multiple times to get ahold of Daniel Nail but we never heard back.

But interestingly, Nail was arrested Wednesday night for weapon charges after he flashed a gun at a person who was trying to collect a debt from him, according to Colorado Springs police. Investigators confirm they confiscated drugs and $3,800 in cash. We haven’t been able to confirm if the debt was related to Nail’s roofing company.

Nail has previously faced drug, assault, and forgery charges in Colorado.
