Homeless community slow to use new shelter beds in Colorado Springs

After November 1st, the number of shelter beds available to the homeless increased, but the number of people actually using them has been slow to start.

On Monday night, the Salvation Army’s shelter was full for the first time since converting to low barrier beds. It was recommended by the city because of the increasing need for someone to sleep at night.

The Springs Rescue Mission has always been a low barrier shelter but hasn’t filled its capacity despite the frigid temperatures.

Homeless men and women on the corner of Kiowa and Cascade gave a variety of reasons why they have decided not to stay in shelters. Kodi Flugge said he avoids it because of theft.

“I came in with a phone and it got stolen,” Flugge said.

Another man who goes by Kern said, “You’re trapped, hey look, I might as well be in jail.”

A common complaint among the homeless was a rule held by the Salvation Army. They aren’t allowing big bags to come into the shelter.

For many who live on the street, what they carry around with them is their entire life and belongings.

Karen Daugherty, director at the Salvation Army shelter said they keep big bags out for safety. Previously, they used to allow bags if they were searched through. Now, a small amount of bags can be kept in a secure area.

The catch is all bags need to leave with their person every morning.

Nick Boswell, a man experiencing homelessness says, “you’re only allowed to take so much in with you and you have to carry everything with you during the day, so it’s impossible to get anything done during the day.”

The rule is bent for people who can prove they have a full-time job.
